DIY Essential Oil Perfume | All Natural Perfume You Can Easily Make Yourself

I like smelling nice, as I’m sure you do too. What I don’t like, is splashing on a bunch of chemicals all over my body in order to smell nice. Before my 90% Clean journey began, I honestly never gave perfume a second thought. It was a nice luxury to have and an instant pick-me-up. After I found out about all of the nasty chemicals, I thought that there had to be a better, more natural way. A little research later, I realized that essential oils were the answer, but man, were they expensive, especially the already blended essential oil perfumes. And, since most of the offerings out there are only available online, there wasn’t really a way to know what they smelled like before buying. I wanted to create my own DIY essential oil perfume that I could monkey around with and get it smelling the way I wanted, without breaking the bank. See below for a couple of the scents that I think smell fresh, clean, flowery, yet not overpowering.

Dangerous Chemicals in Perfume

First, I think I should just briefly touch on what the dangers are with regular perfume. The EPA has tested fragrances and has found toxic chemicals ranging from acetone, benzaldehyde and camphor to ethanol, linalool and methylene chloride. Any one of these chemicals can cause headaches or dizziness, rashes or skin irritations, vomiting, weight gain, hyperpigmentation, severe illness or damage to your body. One of the more common offenders are phthalates (Read my blog post Toxic Chemical Spotlight: What are Phthalates? to learn more on phthalates). Phthalates, disguised as fragrance or perfume on most labels, are known endocrine disruptors and can cause everything from allergic reactions to problems for growing babies to cancer. The only restriction manufacturers have on labeling perfume is to not use any illegal or banned substances – anything else is fair game. That’s pretty scary.

If you are going to buy perfume, try to stick to perfume that is only made with essential oils and a natural carrier water or oil. Look out for fragrance or perfume listed on the ingredients list or products that don’t even have an ingredients list. Buy organic if you can.

DIY Essential Oil Perfume

Ok, now onto the fun part, making our own DIY essential oil perfume. I’m more of a girlie girl, so I wanted something that was feminine, but I didn’t want to smell like a walking flower garden. I also wanted to have a lighter more summertime scent that felt clean and fresh.

What You’ll Need:

A small, dark colored glass spray bottle (s) or mini roller ball bottles (essential oils will eat plastic). I have used this spray bottle or these. I also like these mini roller bottles.
Filtered water or a carrier oil of choice (such as jojoba, olive oil, etc…). I like this jojoba oil.
Essential oils of your choosing (or my choosing if you follow the “recipes” below).

Open your spray bottle and add in the essential oils and then add the water or carrier oil. It will take about 2-3 tablespoons of water, but I just eye-balled it and filled the glass spray bottle up about half way.

*When you make these, you will have to shake them before each use, especially if you are using water, just to redistribute the oils.
